A most violent year is writer & director J.C. Chandor gritty crime drama Set in the winter of 1981 New York in an era when violent crime decay and corruption was at a high in the city the story centres on an immigrant family who are trying to make an honest living in these difficult times.
The film stars Oscar Isaac as Abel Morales an immigrant trying to make a living for his young family within the heating fuel industry against the back drop of corruption within the industry, Abel is trying to expand his empire by buying a bigger premises but only has 30 days to raise the $1.5 million to secure it and having put all of his families savings into the deposit which he will loose if he fails to raise the money he’s finding things difficult, his fleet of trucks are also being hijacked and his drivers viciously assaulted by criminals selling his oil to his competitors Abel finds him self under pressure from the head of the teamsters to allow his drivers firearms to protect themselves Abel is struggling to resist in becoming what he ha always avoided in becoming A Criminal.
Already under investigation from a District attorney assigned to clean up the corrupt sector Abel finds himself falling deeper & deeper into trouble and to make matters worse the case being brought against his company has forced the bank that bankrolling his expansion pulling out Abel is forced to try and raise the money from other means possible.
Isaac is the major plus point in this film as Abel and there is also strong performance from Jessica Chastain as Anna Morales and from English actor David Oyelowo.
Overall this is good movie but I wouldn’t expect it to become a classic.
