Operator (David Vinjamuri)
I have had the “Operator” by David Vinjamuri on my kindle for a few months now and never managed to start reading this book, so when I finally managed to start it I was actually quite surprised in how good the story actually is, although I would say its not the best ex armed forces / vigilante / hero story I have read.
The story is set in upstate NYC and tells of an ex US special forces operator named Michael Herne's who returns to his place of birth to attend the funeral of his old high school girlfriend Melissa who suddenly and surprisingly commits suicide one day out of the blue, he makes the fateful decision to return home for her funeral. Michael hasn't stepped foot in his Catskills hometown for more than a dozen years since he left it and also the promise of a college football scholarship behind to join the Army.
Michael quickly learns that his hometown isn’t who he remembered it as he’s dragged into a web of mystery and corruption surrounding Melissa's death. When Michael confronts an abusive ex-boyfriend of Melisa’s he becomes wanted by the town’s sheriff who has mixed motives and also a ruthless Russian gang at the heart of a people trafficking ring that is at the heart of the towns mysteries. Michael is forced to choose between two paths - that of the desk-working, college-educated intelligence analyst he has become or the Tier I Army Operator he once was. Only one of these identities will survive as Michael is relentlessly hunted by a series of ruthless men.
This superbly accurately researched story that is a seamlessly plotted thriller that I believe is the first in a new series
