Another Saturday & sweet FA by Calvin Wade is different short of football book than I normally read, It focuses on Calvin’s exploits following one team through each round of the FA cup including the preliminary rounds right through to the final at Wembley, the idea started through a conversation with his father one night and it turns into a sort of father son bonding session fused with a mutual love of the same thing FOOTBALL. It also tries to discover whether football fans love for the F.A. Cup is still as strong as it was although it’s certainly not as prestigious as when I was younger, especially now when a team (Man Utd) is allowed to pull out to play a world club tournament when I was younger this was unheard of.
I wanted to read this book as if you're a regular reader of this website will by now know that an a Tranmere Rovers fan for my sins for the most part of 25+ years I have been supporting them & will probably know that we finally dropped out of the football league in 2015 after 94 years so I was keen to read a book about grass roots football and its fans having previously supported a league team I can say I have always regarded the non league as a non existent league I know that is a very arrogant view so I was keen to try and rectify that before the season starts. Anyway Calvin and his dad devise few ground rules on the plan including following the winner of each tie on to the next round and following the winner of that tie and so on and at the start of 2013 season the journey begins. The journey will also require some acts of kindness and a degree of luck if the challenge is to be completed from start to finish.
The adventure begins at West Didsbury & Chorlton FC’s tie at home to Abbey Hey then follows the winner of each tie whether it is home or away following Calvin’s journey as he meets all sorts of new people along the way. This is a brilliant idea one I would love to replicate one day but with the demand for tickets for the bigger clubs nowadays I think it would take a huge slice of luck to replicate this journey.
As the rounds push on the book also becomes an emotional journey with Calvin and his dads relationship becoming very much to the forefront in the book and made me think of the time I went to football with my dad in fact my dad is solely responsible for my love of football, it also reminded me that the last game I went to with my dad was the league cup final back in 2001 since then my mum has recently passed away so I am keen to try and get my dad out as much as possible and I certainly intend to drag him back to the football soon although as Liverpool fan i doubt going to watch Tranmere will be that appealing. Calvin also struggles with the financial burden of being a self employed author but is soon forced to find work to fund his journey and support his family.
This is a brilliant well written book that certainly proves Calvin is an excellent author who if his other books are as entertaining he will certainly have a successful career as an author.
