Wings Of A Sparrow
Dougie Brimson, take a bow and I also would like to say a massive thank you for sending me the book to review for "ADORED"
Wings of a sparrow is the funniest book of the year without a doubt and the fact it's about my other favourite subject Football just added to its appeal.
Rob Cooper loves football and especially Utd Rob is also the editor of UTD's fanzine "Wings of a sparrow" and one thing he really loves doing in it is poking fun at City, UTD's bitter rivals.
Then out of the blue Rob is hunted down by a solicitor Lee England and Rob thinks it’s about the latest slander case being brought on him by someone annoyed by one of "wings of sparrows" many article ripping City but much to his surprise Rob receives some shocking news that he had an uncle named Arthur who has unfortunately passed away but as Arthur never had any children himself Rob is the sole benefactor of the will, which is a life changing £6 million but there is a catch a very big catch Rob's uncle was the Chairman of City and if Rob wants to receive the money he must help City end the season in a better position both financially and points wise than the previous season.
Rob has a massive dilemma does he take the challenge of being City's new chairman for the season and risk the abuse from the clubs fans who are inevitably annoyed a UTD fan is in charge of the club they love and being alienated by his own beloved UTD's fans and more importantly his son Charlie who is like his dad a devoted UTD fan for £6 million or does he keep his principles and turn his back on the offer to return to his poorly paid monotonous council job and if that's not enough Rob's marriage to Jane has been going through the motions since he found out about her affair with Brian who she nearly walked out on him and Charlie for and into the arms of, so when she gets
wind of Rob's possible inheritance she becomes a money obsessed nightmare for Rob adding to his troubles.
Rob eventually decides on taking up the challenge but Rob Being Rob decided if he has to go through the nightmare season in order to receive the money he wants to humiliate City in the process but as Rob soon discovers it not going to be a as straightforward as he thought.
The books is a laugh out loud ride of emotions that leaves the reader both loving & hating Rob at times over the course of the season but I certainly wouldn't want to be him!!
Dougie Brimson has struck gold with this book that challenges modern football's ethics, if a fan was actually given the opportunity to manage a rival team would the chairman be able to resist putting the knife in? Would the FA / UEFA or FIFA actually allow it to happen? One thing is for certain though this book will leave you still thinking about it long after you have finished reading it.
