David Beckham
So David Beckham starts another chapter in his already illustrious football career that has seen him play for some massive clubs from his humble beginnings at Manchester Utd to a more recent stint in the
MLS at LA Galaxy but where ever Beckham goes he never fails to be successful.
The latest chapter in brand Beckham has seen him arrive at one of Europe's super clubs PSG currently managed by Beckham's former manager at Milan Carlo Ancelotti and sporting director Leonardo. PSG are now owned by Qatar Investment Authority fronted by Nasser Al-Khelaïfi a former Qatar tennis player. In what some are calling a marketing ploy Beckham will not be paid any wages by PSG for the remaining 6 months on his contract, all the money is being donated to a local Paris children's charity, I personally think it’s not such a bad thing maybe a few other players should take a leaf out his book.
David Beckham started his football journey what seems like a life time ago at the tender age of 17 at Manchester Utd Making his debut as a sub in a league cup tie against Brighton still as a youth player. Beckham signed his first professionalcontract at Utd but was sent out on loan by Sir Alex to PNE (Preston North End) to gain some valuable first team experience, at PNE Beckham scored his first ever senior goal in the loan spell he scores 2 goals in five games on of which was direct from a corner. Beckham returned to Utd and the rest is history as they say with Beckham leaving Utd for Real Madrid for 35 million having won 6 league titles, 2 FA Cups, 4 FA Community Shields, 1 intercontinental Cup & the small matter of a Champions league in that famous comeback against Bayern in Barcelona where Utd scored 2 late goals to clinch the cup.
So off to Madrid brand Beckham went and at the time Real where assembling quite a squad of players but they never really hit the heights they should off with the galáctico's, a team of super stars and home grown players such as Beckham, Ronaldo, Zidane, Figo, Carlos, Cassilas & Raul brought together by Real president Perez in search of making Real the best team in the world, although this never really materialised Perez in his second term as Real president tried it again with a little more success. Beckham's time at Real has seen him mature as a footballer although no one can dispute his success at Man Utd he seemed to become a more rounded player maybe partly to the fact he had more time on the ball to pick out killer passes at Real, Beckham left Madrid after his 4 Years was up and on hindsight this stint was very successful seeing him win 1 la liga& 1 Spanish super cup although for Beckham personally it seen him become a global superstar making brand Beckham one of the most successful sporting brands invite world.
6 months before the end of his Real contract it was announced he would be leaving Spain Beckham raised more eyebrows with speculation rife of a Beckham return to England with possibly Arsenal "becks" announced he was off to the MLS which was under a major rebranding at the time and was clearly trying to improve its image by signing top class footballers. Beckham clearly enjoyed the LA lifestyle as Beckham found a new gear in the sunshine his family seemed to embrace the American lifestyle too Beckham won More trophies in US, 2 MLS cups, 4 MLS supporters shields, ML 3 Western conference winners, 3 MLS Play offs.
While playing in the MLS due to their seasons being different to European leagues Beckham was loaned out to AC Milan during galaxies close season this arrangement benefitted the player ensuring he kept his match fitness up, this arrangement also seen him link up with Ancelotti and Leonardo for the first time. This also showed his critics that his spell in the MLS hasn't seen him deteriorate as a top class player even if during his time in the US did see him call time on his international career.
Then there is his illustrious England career where unfortunately he has never won a major trophy with England but his contribution to the effort should not be forgot, especially with his fantastic last gasp free kick at Old Trafford against Greece that ensured England'squalification for The 2002 World Cup.
David Beckham has also set up his own soccer schools around the world, trying to help youngsters who might not normally get the opportunity to be involved in the sport he loves, and maybe he's on the lookout for the next big superstar!
So as I mentioned earlier the next chapter in David Beckham's remarkable career sees him moving to PSG a team that some pundits are tipping for greatness over the next few seasons, will "Becks" have an impact in France? Only time will tell but with PSG at the top of ligue 1 and still in the champions league I wouldn't rule out the possibility of another trophy or 2 on his CV before he retires
