Bloodland by Alan Glynn is a pulse racing political
thriller that twists and turns in a different direction with every chapter.
I decided to read Bloodland partially due having already read and loved Alan Glynn's previous book "Dark Fields" and now a major movie called Limitless staring Bradley Cooper & Robert de Nero, although it is worth mentioning that this is not the same sort of genre as limitless although it is as well written.
An inquisitive young journalist Jimmy Gilroy sets out writing a book about the tragic life of a coke addicted Irish movie starlet Susie Monaghan who's tragic death seemed like an accident when the helicopter she was travelling in crashed. Jimmy Gilroy soon discovers that maybe it's not a coincidence maybe there is something more sinister going on.
Then his suspicions are confirmed when Gilroy is approached by Dave Conway and asked to drop the Monaghan book and work on another bigger project one that will catapult Gilroy's notoriety within the industry, he's asked to write the memoirs of former Irish Prime Minister Larry Bolger who is Conway's friend to boot.
Larry Bolger is going through the motions he's a recovering alcoholic well so his wife Mary thinks but as Jimmy soon discovers there is something about the whole Bolger / memoirs thing that he just can't put his finger on but one thing is for sure he certainly intends to.
Gilroy has bigger choices to make does he accept the Conway / Bolger offer or will he continue with his Monaghan book? you will just have to read it yourself to find out!
Bloodland is slow to start with in my opinion but all that does is build up the story and characters for roller coaster climax that once it started moving long I just couldn't put it down wanting to see what twist was coming next.
If you like thrillers then I would defiantly say check out Bloodland.
