Every so often comes a book that is so controversial that you just want to read it, well my next book is no different in fact it's fair to say the controversy is the only reason I actually wanted to read this book. The book is Sir Alex Ferguson's autobiography.
If you haven't heard of the man then I can only think you have either been in a coma for the last 20 odd years or you have had a nasty bout of amnesia, Sir Alex as he is known as was the manager of Manchester United Football Club from 1986 - 2013, in that time he has made UTD into one of England's most successful football clubs surpassing the number of league titles won that was previously held by the great Liverpool teams of the past and who are in fact UTD's biggest arch rivals. It has been said that things haven't always been rosy for the Scot who came to England from Aberdeen in Scotland where he had
won the European Cup Winners Cup & European super cup and was appointed UTD manager on the back of Aberdeen's success by a board who were desperate to restore UTD's success last seen under the Late Matt Busby, apparently Sir Alex was a game away from the sack when in an FA cup tie which they were expected to lose, UTD won the game 1-0 the goal was scored by Mark Robins and UTD went on to win the cup and the rest is history as they say. This started a remarkable phase of English football that the likes of have never been seen before and I doubt ever will been seen again, Manchester UTD where simply unstoppable in these years winning countless trophies including a record number of league titles and that all illusive European Cup the holy grail of football.
So how can this book be controversial I hear you shout if the manager was so successful? well it's simple he has slated many of the players that brought him the success of this period players like his former captain Roy Keane who Ferguson following Keane's hip and knee surgery. “He thought he was Peter Pan,’’ Ferguson writes. “Nobody is.’’. In fact Keane probably gets mitre caritas ism than most in the book to be honest.
Although Fergie does slate a few players mostly former players of his own it is fair to say the book defiantly doesn't live up to the hype and controversy it has caused that's not a criticism of the book which I really enjoyed even though am not a Manchester United fan it's more a criticism of the press on how they have blown things well and truly out of proportion regarding his comments.
This book is a brilliant read for any football fan of any age old enough to remember any of the great united sides that have dominated English football over the past 15+ years or so.
