The Australian Pink Floyd are celebrating the 40th anniversary of Pink Floyds iconic album Wish You Were Here by embarking on a “Welcome To The Machine” tour encompassing the U.K, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Austria, Belgium & The Netherlands in which they are performing the whole of the album in the first half of the show and then performing other material in the second half. I managed to catch TAPFS in the Echo Arena Liverpool and what a show it was.
As mentioned before the first half of the show started with Astronomy Domine then broken into the whole of the 1975 Album Wish You Were Here in the order as per the album so Shine on You Crazy Diamond parts 1 - 5 that featured a visual tribute to Syd Barrett, Welcome to the Machine, Have A Cigar, then there was a visual tribute to Australia in the lead to Wish You Were Here featuring Skippy the kangaroo, Kyle to name a few one notable absentee for obvious reason was Rolf Harris! Next up was the last parts of Shine On You Crazy Diamonds Parts 6 -9, The Happiest Days of Our Lives which rolled into Another Brick In The Wall Part 2 which saw an appearance on stage from A Giant inflatable School teacher and some really fantastic visuals this lead to an interval approx 30 mins and considering that the whole concert was 2hrs 30 this was a welcome chance to get a drink or stretch your legs.
The second part of the show contained some absolute Floyd classics but saying that nearly all of Floyd’s songs are classics in my humble opinion, so the second part commenced with In the Flesh, Learning to Fly, Time which again featured some really fantastic visuals, Then the Great Gig In The Sky which gave all 3 backing singers the chance to perform a solo part of the song exhibiting there fantastic vocal ranges, Next was Money and a fantastic Saxophone solo for Mike Kidson, Young Lust, High Hopes, One Of these Days that featured an appearance from a pink inflatable kangaroo which was still dancing on stage when the next song Comfortably Numb ended.
The Band went off stage briefly only to come back on and perform a customary encore featuring Louder than Words off the new album Endless River which consists of song that where recorded as part of the Division Bell sessions then came the final song of the night Run Like Hell.
The Australian Pink Floyd are an absolute must see band even if your not the greatest of Pink Floyd fans am sure that you will have an amazing time and you’ll defiantly by the end of the show find yourself tapping your feet or even signing along, The visuals are second only to there idols. I absolutely loved the bands inflatable’s just watching them was mesmerizing in its self. They sound so good that the other day is listening to Floyd but on Saturday I actually preferred TAPF’S version! One final note on how good the band are they where actually asked to perform for Dave Gilmour’s 50th Birthday celebrations back in 1996 and have since performed with other Floyd members.
